Artist's Biography

Rose Hilton is painting as strongly now as she was when she first met and married the famous 50's abstract artist Roger Hilton. Today her work has never been better, painting with renewed confidence.

She achieves in her work a marriage between abstraction and figurative painting that at times is masterful. Hard-edged description gives way to soft rubbed through colour shapes, which blend in to describe in their juxtaposition the emphasis she is seeking within her chosen subject matter. There is now strength in her tentative colouring. The predominantly post impressionistic palette reflects an allegiance to the old masters except that she has pushed on from there, picking up from Roger - lessons in the use of space. Her paintings now have the strength of those that do not shout and in them you will find a cluttered life in harmony. They speak - in short - a very feminine voice.

Rose was born in Kent in 1931 and attended Buckingham Art School before going on to the Royal College of Art where she won the Life Drawing and Painting Prize as well as the Abbey Miner Scholarship to Rome. On her return to London she started teaching but found time to exhibit with the Young Contemporaries. It was during this time that she met and married Roger Hilton and the next decade was spent in support of him and his own burgeoning career as well as raising two sons.

It was only after Roger's death in 1975 that Rose has been able to paint and her great and latent talent has begun to emerge from the relative obscurity of her long devotion to husband and family.
